Perry Campaign Funded Green Party Initiative

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ Gov. Rick Perry's re-election campaign was paying a Republican operative who helped get the Green Party on the Texas ballot.

The Dallas Morning News reported Wednesday on campaign finance reports showing the campaign paid Stuart Moss for mileage while he was doing political research in November. That's the same time he helped the Green Party field candidates.

Democrats say liberal Green Party candidates could help Perry by siphoning votes away from Democrat Bill White. The Texas Democratic Party has sued the Green Party to identify the source of $532,000 that bankrolled the petition drive that made it possible for the third party to get candidates on the November ballot.

Perry spokesman Mark Miner says the governor's campaign was not involved in the Green Party petition drive.

Houston Man Faces Sentencing for Drunk Driving Deaths

HOUSTON (AP) _ A Houston father could learn his fate for the drunken-driving deaths of five children, including three of his own, who drowned after he lost control of his car and veered into a rain-swollen ditch.

A sentencing hearing with witness testimony was scheduled for Thursday in Houston for 34-year-old Chanton Jenkins. He pleaded guilty earlier this year to five counts of intoxication manslaughter.

Prosecutors say state District Judge Mary Lou Keel could issue a sentence on Thursday or hold off until next week. Jenkins could face up to life in prison.

Police say Jenkins was driving drunk and using his cell phone on the afternoon of April 18, 2009, when he lost control of his car, which went off the road and plunged into the ditch.

Judge Tosses Open Meetings Lawsuit

E-mail Print PDF

EL PASO, Texas (AP) _ A federal judge in West Texas has ruled that four Texas cities can't sue that state over its open meetings law.

In the nine-page ruling, U.S. District Judge Robert Junell of Pecos concluded that the cities of Alpine, Pflugerville, Rockport and Wichita Falls can't sue Texas and Attorney General Greg Abbott to overturn the state law.

The cities and more than a dozen elected officials sued Abbott and the state last year. They argued that the Texas Open Meetings Act violates the officials' First Amendment rights to free speech by barring elected officials from deliberating in secret.
